Sweet Donkey Coffee: A Little Roanoke Charm in Every Cup

The Local Edit | Everstone Realty Group

Some places are worth slowing down for. Sweet Donkey Coffee House is one of them.

Tucked along Broadway Avenue in Roanoke, Virginia, Sweet Donkey Coffee House is the kind of place that makes you want to order another cup, find a cozy corner, and stay a little longer.

Housed in a charming home built in 1922, this locally loved coffee shop offers something you won't find at your typical drive-through coffee chain: character, history, and a welcoming atmosphere that feels a little like visiting an old friend.

And sometimes, that's exactly what you need.

More Than Just a Coffee Shop

One of the things that makes Sweet Donkey special is the setting.

Instead of a traditional café layout, you'll find inviting rooms, comfortable places to settle in, and a beautiful porch and patio that make it easy to enjoy a little fresh air.

On a chilly Roanoke morning, there's something especially appealing about finding a warm spot inside with your favorite latte. When the weather cooperates, the outdoor seating is perfect for catching up with friends or enjoying a quiet moment.

It's a wonderful reminder that some of the best places in our community aren't necessarily the newest or flashiest. They're the places that make you feel at home.

Let's Talk Coffee (and Waffles!)

Of course, the coffee deserves some attention, too.

Sweet Donkey partners with Counter Culture Coffee, known for its thoughtfully sourced beans and dedication to quality. Whether you're a classic cappuccino person, a latte lover, or someone who enjoys trying creative specialty drinks, there's plenty to explore.

And if you're stopping by hungry, don't overlook the food.

Their scratch-made buttermilk waffles, served with pure Vermont maple syrup, are a particularly tempting reason to visit. You'll also find options like quiche, oatmeal, yogurt, pastries, and other light bites.

Local tip: If waffles are calling your name, visit before noon on weekdays or 2 p.m. on weekends, when waffle service ends.

A Place That Brings People Together

What we love about places like Sweet Donkey is how naturally they become part of a community.

It's a place for morning coffee dates, conversations with friends, an afternoon with a good book, or a change of scenery while getting a little work done.

Sweet Donkey also offers a beer garden, and its event calendar features opportunities for live music and food trucks.

It's the kind of neighborhood gathering place that adds something special to everyday life in Roanoke.
